It’s amazing how small comments can affect people.
This week, I had two experiences from two different ends of the spectrum.
Incident number 1 occurred outside of the local shopping mall. I was sitting outside with a soft pretzel, reading something on my tablet when a man came up to me and handed me a slip of paper. He looked at me and said,
“I just saw you sitting here and thought you were absolutely gorgeous….so if you’re interested…”
I looked at the paper, which had his name and number on it. As he walked away, he said again, “You’re gorgeous.”
Should I call the guy who said I’m gorgeous?
Of course I was flattered. I didn’t know what to say, so I just thanked him and tucked the paper into my tablet case. It’s not every day that someone comes up to me and says I’m attractive. It made my day.
Two days later I was walking the halls at work when some guy looked at me and said,
“What do you weigh? Like 60 pounds?”
I know that there are people who won’t agree with me on this one, but I never think it’s ok to ask a woman how much she weighs. Whether she’s Kate Moss skinny or carrying a few extra holiday pounds, a woman can always think of things she’d rather discuss than her weight.
And I’m skinny. I get it. But that doesn’t mean I want to sit and talk about how much I weigh any more than a woman who’s bigger wants to talk about how much she needs to lose weight.
So really, gentlemen…women would rather hear you say she’s gorgeous than field questions about the number on the scale.
